Tramuntana

Gusts like wrecking balls howl the picnic table through our bay window. The majestic red maple, shorn of its roots, clasps the jeep in a fierce, shimmering embrace. Nothing will satisfy this keening banshee.

  1. I love how you made "howl" transitive here - what a creative use of the word, and so vivid. Amazing, terrifying picture. I hope this is fiction!

    1. Oooh Thanks for the love, Christine! Fiction as far as the physical world is concerned. It's pretty much like what my inner sanctum feels like, though : )

    2. I also agree that "howl" works there. I did a double-take on it, but got it and enjoyed it. That's a worse storm than I've had recently!

  6. Those sorts of storms are best endured underneath. As in, underneath a bed, underneath the covers, etc. What a frightening image!

    1. Yeah, keening banshee's one of the scariest things ever. Especially when it is in your head... (I exaggerate though). The problem is if you can get underneath the bed... Thanks, Janna!

  14. My husband has been through a hurricane similar to the setting you've created here, looking out a window and seeing large-ish objects flying by. You paint this picture so authentically, Kymm! "Keening banshee" is not only musically personified but somehow the aptest word choice (though certainly not expected) to close the piece. Awesome work!

    1. Thank you so much, Leigh! I survived Hurricane Bob back home for a visit years ago, though I grew up more accustomed to Nor'easters. Hurricane Bob sent a shabbily attached widow's walk through a neighbor's front dorr, as well as beaching innumerable yachts.
This storm, though, was in my head.
