Laws of Motion

Bursting from the forest, deer strewn in his wake, he crashes through the mosquito screen and dives under her bed. Moonlight glints off the salt-and-pepper fur of his quaking hind leg. Shaken, Megan wakes to the distant pop and flash of fireworks.

  4. I wanted it to be a werewolf but he wouldnt dive under her bed would he. And was that a dead deer it had or a deer that it killed all by itself?

    1. It most certainly can be a werewolf! All dog-like creatures might dive under beds at the sound of fireworks. I had thought bear (some big out-of-control beast) trampling deer, yes.
      Thanks for the visit, Habiba!

  5. I thought maybe it was deer hunting season -- or perhaps the 4th of July or some other holiday? I could picture vividly him scrambling under the bed. Thanks for the read, Kymm.

    1. My dual residence, surely, causes the confusion. I hate firecrackers since living in Barcelona, where they shoot off fireworks at the drop of a hat.
      Thanks so much, Meg!

  9. Poor thing : ( I hate fireworks!

This is great. You painted this scene perfectly with only 42 words. I like the image of the deer strewn in his wake when he crashes through the screen.

  11. I love the action of this, the sense of frenzied fear. (The poor Corgi I was dogsitting the last time we had fireworks made a heroic jump onto my bed--the first time ever--and lay there shuddering for what seemed like hours.)
